Why is a photograph worth a thousand words? Who came up with that number anyway? Why not just one hundred? Or five -hundred?

(This blog is 612 words plus a photograph, so here are 1612 words about the “photographer-writer.”)

From Doolin To Dingle, Ireland’s Southwest Coast

The white sign glared from the black asphalt road: “Very Slow.”

It is a sensible warning, for there is no need to hurry in West Ireland. The corridor from Doolin in County Clare to Dingle in County Kerry stirs with scenes of earth, rain, and fire supported by a cast of Irish characters.

I came to Ireland accompanying the Stage Door Canteen, a swing band from Falmouth, Mass., my hometown. Its big-band sound differs from the traditional Irish Celtic music I discovered on Ireland’s Southwest Coast.

Sculptures by Louis Mulcahy in Dingle             Copyright © Mark Chester

Though there was the sound of a roaring fire in the parlor of Moy House, it was a shot of Midleton single malt Irish whiskey that soothed my nerves after driving six hours on the left-hand side of the road from Dublin to the West Coast.

Moy House is a refurbished 1820s private home built of local sea stone and situated on Liscannor Bay, now a Bed and Breakfast set on 15 wooded acres with a river running through it. The welcome letter to guests invites “weather and, time permitting, you may wish to borrow a pair of Wellies and head down our lawn to the Atlantic…”

The “weather permitting” part was a tip off. They say the same thing in Ireland as in New England. “If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute.”

But no matter the time of day, the last weekend of February, is magical in Doolin. It is the place where the best Irish musicians play in the Russell Memorial Weekend that honors the three late Russell brothers, Micho, Pakie, and Gusso, Doolin’s world-class concertina, timber flute and tin whistle players, respectively. Born in the early 1900s, the brothers Russell have left an indelible impression on Irish music.

Ivan Karp

When Ivan and Ethan Karp offered an exhibition of Twosomes at OK Harris, Ethan quipped,

Since (as you know), the end of the world falls on December 21, 2012, we might want to make it sometime in the spring or early fall at the latest.

Twosomes and Mark Chester Photography were the beneficiaries of being welcomed into Ivan Karp’s world, graciously hosted at OK Harris.

Ivan Karp, Pop Art Dealer, Dies at 86 By DOUGLAS MARTIN Published: June 29, 2012

Ivan Karp, a cigar-chomping, fast-talking New York gallery owner who helped find, popularize and market the Pop artists of the 1960s, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauschenberg, died on Thursday at his home in Charlotteville, N.Y. He was 86.

Twosomes at the Panopticon Gallery

IN THE PRIVATE ROOM

TWOSOMES: Photographs by Mark Chester May 30 - July 9th, 2012

Mark Chester has been a professional photographer since 1972. His photographs and/or feature stories have been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, and The Chicago Tribune among other periodicals.

Photographs from Chester’s latest book, Twosomes, published by Un-Gyve Press in 2011, feature pairings of photographs from decades of traveling the globe. Through Chester’s photographs he has captured, in a sense, the unrelated nature of chance. The side-by-side placement of the photographs feed off of each other, and to some, might appear amusing and a bit tongue-in-cheek.

“

Thankfully – miraculously – I still have the energy, curiosity, and perseverance that I had when I was a twenty-something, self-taught photographer during the mid-1960s. Now, almost 67, my “modus operandi” remains unchanged.

I still think in terms of visual stories that would be fun to show and tell. My ideas still come from some magical inner source; but there’s a wellspring right in front of us everyday – in newspapers, television, the Internet, and on the street. There’s a story everywhere.

Telling them, showing them is our personal challenge.

Maybe the venues have changed through the years; online z-magazines, blogospheres and websites have replaced many of the traditional printed publications to show photography.

Nonetheless, as storytellers, we photographers need to see and think outside of the box to show our images. One unique photographer thinks out of this planet.

Jerry Uelsmann, 77, recently spoke at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, where his exhibition, “The Mind’s Eye: 50 years of Photography,” is on display through June 30, 2012.

The exhibit features two remarkable artists in different media from
different cultural worlds.

Mark Chester presents an exhibit of the photography from a lifetime of
travel across the globe captivatingly presented in pairs of seemingly
unrelated images which bare remarkable relationships, they engage in a dialogue on the wall.

Ofill Echevarria, Cuban-American painter and multimedia artist
captures realistic images from urban life that explore the world
beneath and beyond the surface in a dynamic dialogue with the soul.

The news that 271 works by Picasso valued at nearly $80 million recently discovered in an electrician’s garage, shocked the art world. Then there was the art fiasco that left egg tempera on the face of funnyman and serious art collector Steve Martin when his German painting was discovered a forgery.

The art business can be rough and tough. It’s a big business too.

“So Big!” was even the title of an exhibition at the Cotuit Center for the Arts earlier this year on Cape Cod.

I’ve been fortunate to have photographed some big time artists over the years: sculptor Robert Arneson, courtroom illustrator Howard Brodie, bigger-than-life storyteller in stone Korczak Ziolkowski, photographers Gordon Parks and Richard Avedon.

Charles Kuralt: A Role Model
By Mark Chester

I think it’s safe to say that each one of us has a role model, someone who touched us or influenced our direction in life, either directly or indirectly.

With the passings of Walter Cronkite, the CBS Television newsman, and Don Hewitt, a CBS news producer and director, there was another CBS broadcaster who shaped my future. And now as I enter a mid-career stage in my profession, I reflect on the one role model who steered me to becoming a photojournalist.

He was remembered by the New York Times  and  small-town dailies.    Network  and  Cable  broadcasters  memorialized  their colleague  with  glowing  admiration.   Charles  Kuralt  was  the country’s Everyman.   He traveled America’s backroads chronicling folksy stories about real folks, way before “reality tv” shows.  His subjects were lauded as much as Kuralt himself, who died too young at 62, July 4, 1997. It’s a memorable date. He inspired my quest for independence.

“

‘Twosomes’ is a playful, observant collection of thoughtfully paired black-and-white images …. it could probably charm even this season’s most deeply begrudged ….

The sense that those who helped create this book really had you, the viewer, personally in mind is a real treat and a welcome counterbalance to today’s particularly challenging times.
